Life at Ankor is dynamic; we approach the world as an interesting place with much to offer. Each subject is learned in various ways including observation, experimentation, repetition, movement, touch, listening, practice, investigation, processing, internalization, activity, passivity, and more. The learning experience is multisensory and multi-age and the school grounds are entirely open to the children. Movement between the different spaces of the school and into the yard and garden is nearly unlimited throughout the day. We learn through modeling – and our work is based on the assumption that children will learn by imitating the behaviors of those around them.

Life at Ankor is active, dynamic, joyous, and pleasant. We play, cook, bake, paint, dig and build in the sand, embroider, sew, cry a little, laugh a lot, sing, and dance, and the children – do so with us. We eat, goof around, and maintain our vegetable garden together. We take almost daily urban field trips to city parks and the nearby beach. We get excited over the annual cycle together, celebrating holidays and other life events such as birthdays, new homes, new brothers and sisters, and more. These activities are conducted with joy, enthusiasm, and the practice of life skills, without much talking but plenty of doing.

Each day, three “time blocks,” a total of 4 and a half hours (over 5 academic hours), are dedicated to learning suited to the various age groups. Each block focuses on a different discipline, and is sometimes broken up into smaller units based on activity, content, and ability.
