Ankor is a growing, curious and joyous, multi-age, Hebrew-and-English speaking private school established to offer children a supportive, inclusive, physically and emotionally safe environment tailored to their personality and needs.
Ankor was founded by Ankori Director Osnat Haber-Koton and Tamar Gruper-Packman, with the belief that a kindergarten and school should be, above all, a joyous place that makes children, parents, and staff happy and excited to wake up to in the morning.
Our top priority is maintaining trust and open dialogue between children and adults. We believe that trust-based relationships are essential to the growth and development of children, and of our adult staff. We always favor being in favor. We will usually say, “it is possible,” “yes,” “it is allowed.” If something truly does not work, we reassess and make a decision based on the needs of both the child and group. Educational research and theory are an important part of our thinking and activity, but we have learned that the most important variable, which we cannot compromise on, is the quality of our staff and our educators’ ability to combine theory and practice, take interest, inspire curiosity, and create an environment that fosters development and is happy, pleasant, studious, and creative.
Life at Ankor is dynamic; we approach the world as an interesting place with much to offer. Each subject is learned in various ways including observation, experimentation, repetition, movement, touch, listening, practice, investigation, processing, internalization, activity, passivity, and more. The learning experience is multisensory and multi-age and the school grounds are entirely open to the children. Movement between the different spaces of the school and into the yard and garden is nearly unlimited throughout the day. We learn through modeling – and our work is based on the assumption that children will learn by imitating the behaviors of those around them.
Life at Ankor is active, dynamic, joyous, and pleasant. We play, cook, bake, paint, dig and build in the sand, embroider, sew, cry a little, laugh a lot, sing, and dance, and the children – do so with us. We eat, goof around, and maintain our vegetable garden together. We take almost daily urban field trips to city parks and the nearby beach. We get excited over the annual cycle together, celebrating holidays and other life events such as birthdays, new homes, new brothers and sisters, and more. These activities are conducted with joy, enthusiasm, and the practice of life skills, without much talking but plenty of doing.
Each day, three “time blocks,” a total of 4 and a half hours (over 5 academic hours), are dedicated to learning suited to the various age groups. Each block focuses on a different discipline, and is sometimes broken up into smaller units based on activity, content, and ability.
In order to allow multi-age mobility and create multi-disciplinary connections and contexts, we have divided the Ankor school year into “periods.” These 6-7 week units each revolve around a theme or meta-subject that guides the focus of our academic disciplines: language, math, science and technology, English, art, music, cooking, etc. Our staff conduct activities around the theme, in small groups and with varying academic focus, learning levels, difficulty, and depth. The learning groups themselves are heterogeneous in age, but relatively homogeneous in terms of learning level, and as personally tailored to individual needs as possible. The themes have been selected to create cyclicality, corresponding with seasons, holidays, and annual events.

The Ankor staff has the utmost respect for the trust parents place in us, and is dedicated to providing every possible resource to promote healthy development. To this end, we conduct regular staff and one-on-one meetings with our team members. Work at Ankor is collaborative and based on a common understanding of our guiding principles.
Our staff members are engaging, educated individuals who love people in general and working with children in particular. Their time at Ankor is an opportunity to be of service and hone their talents, skills, and passions with joy and enthusiasm. They therefore serve as role models for the children under their care. Our team members make sure to set an example and treat one another with respect, create a peaceful and safe environment, provide interesting stimulus, listen and take interest, laugh and create, do and rest, and inspire and exercise curiosity.
Ankor was established at the Ankori house on Sirkin St. 3 in Tel Aviv. The building, among the first in the then-northern Nordia neighborhood, was designed by Yehuda Stempler in 1926. Initially only the first two floors were built – the yard level and ground floor – and it was called “the Taitelman house.” Years later, three additional floors were added, and Ankori made the building its home in the 1970s. It has served Ankori pupils and administration ever since.
Ankor began its first year on the first two floors of the building, which were renovated to accommodate its approach and needs. It was important to us that the homey nature of the structure and yard be maintained. The kitchen, living room, studio, and theater room, which also serves as a nap room in the afternoons, were placed on the yard level. On the ground floor, past the office, a large lobby leads to our open, brightly lit music and movement room and to our classroom with its ornate floors.
We believe it all comes down to relationships, mutual understanding, and managing expectations. For this reason, personal meetings are very important to us. Registering for Ankori involves an introductory group meeting with our space, staff, approach, and method.
The meeting is a chance to get detailed information, ask questions, and make sure you are interested in moving forward. After the meeting, interested parties are invited to a personal conversation where we can become better acquainted, assess compatibility, and address any special questions or requests.
Availability depends on the multi-age balance and gender ratio in each age group.
